My Happy Place - Ben Gains His Independence

Meet Ben – our sports-loving resident who’s found his happy place in his new Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) home in Cranbourne East.

Ben moved into his High Physical Support home in August 2024, after previously living with his mum and dad in Gippsland. The move was a major step towards independence.

Why Cranbourne East? The location was everything for Ben. As a passionate sports fan, Ben needed to be close to the action. He records his own podcast Ben’s Sports Talk, works as a media production assistant at Wallara, trains with the Hawthorn Wheelchair Footy Team at Dandenong Stadium, and goes to the local gym regularly. All of this is now just a short distance from his home.

Getting to and from these places used to be a challenge. Ben’s mum had even stopped working to help him travel, with taxis proving too expensive. So, when Ben found an InPlace Living home in the right location – it was a game-changer.

“When I first met with InPlace Living, they really took what I needed into account,” says Ben. “When Mum and Dad came and saw the house, they were amazed, as was I, with the level of independence that I could gain.”

Ben’s home is packed with accessible technology that helps him live on his terms. From height-adjustable kitchen benches to an electric robe rail in his bedroom, every detail has been thoughtfully designed with independence in mind.

“It makes independence a lot more achievable,” Ben shares. “It really helps me live my life and now, I definitely feel like this is my home and this is where I belong.”
